Standing with them in their sorrow

Moving among the sick and injured, Roy “Butch” Vernon grieved alongside Haitians who had lost homes and loved ones.

Vernon, pastor of Thoroughbred Community Church in Nicholasville, Ky., was part of a 10-person Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief medical team, one of the earliest Southern Baptist teams to help victims of the earthquake that struck Haiti Jan. 12.

Moments from Vernon’s report of his last day show some of the ways the team helped those struggling to return to day-to-day life after experiencing great loss.

  • A teen came into the clinic after wandering from weeks alone. She was pulled from the rubble of her home two days after the quake only to learn that everyone else in her family had died.
  • A young boy came into the clinic with an earache and left relieved after a doctor pulled a bean from his ear canal.
  • A ruckus outside the hospital tent came inside when four victims of a knife fight were rushed in for treatment just as volunteers were finishing their day.

“It is a relief that as we leave there are other teams already in place to fill the gaps,” said Vernon. Even as the Kentucky team left, other Southern Baptist teams were arriving to continue aid to earthquake survivors.

Flash doesn’t imbed easily into PowerPoint 2007 under Vista…. gets really complicated. How about something Microsoft friendly to download. Great video, though!

Thank God for those blessed to go, and for what God is doing there in the hearts and lives of the Haitian people. May they all come to know Christ as Lord!
