The small-framed girl weaves through the mass of bodies bustling along a congested sidewalk. Her dark, almond-shaped eyes dart from person to person, choosing a subject. She approaches a woman and tugs on her sleeve, extending a small, dirty palm and uttering in a childish, imploring voice: “Sister, give me two taka!”
The woman shrugs her off, telling Minara* to go find work as a housemaid. The girl cries, “No, give me money!” but the woman brushes past and continues on her way.
Minara isn’t fazed — she’s gotten used to these reactions, and worse. The 9-year-old, dressed in faded, dirty clothes, continues pushing through the crowd to find another kind face. She must find some generous souls if she and her family will eat tonight.

What was Don Rutledge’s approach to a photo story? Some photographers barge into a situation, gadget bags swinging, and create virtual chaos. Then they wonder why people don’t “act naturally.” Somehow, Rutledge managed both to blend into the background and to make friends with everyone in sight — all the while quietly searching out the story. That was his outward method; something more mysterious happened within. No matter how carefully they observed the same people and situations, writers who worked with him on stories would look at his pictures later and discover he had seen important things that had escaped their notice — a look, a sigh, an emotion. He called them “windows on the soul” of his subjects. Here are a few of them from a long and historic career.

Together, they changed the way the IMB communicates missions by creating powerful, personal photo stories that conveyed the love and grace of God through human relationships.
Photographer Don Rutledge, who died Feb. 19 at age 82, revolutionized missions storytelling. His influence on generations of mission communicators — and more importantly, generations of Southern Baptists — is incalculable. Traveling throughout the United States and to more than 140 countries over more than 40 years, Rutledge captured missions and ministry in hundreds of classic photographs taken for the Home (now North American) Mission Board and later for the Foreign (now International) Mission Board. His images helped millions of inspired viewers to understand, pray for and participate in missions.

RICHMOND, Va.—The world pays attention to big, loud things: wars, disasters, spectacles, celebrities, political showdowns.

The people of God are often found in quieter places, doing quieter things. Yes, they respond to wars and disasters, especially if they can help relieve suffering and provide comfort to survivors. But they go far beyond the countries that dominate the headlines to spread Christ’s light and life anywhere people live in darkness.

Our multimedia teams see your mission offering dollars at work in every story we do. It's an humbling experience to see how small and large gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering combine to make it possible to reach a lost world. This year, the AsiaStories staff wanted to make a better visual connection between our stories and your mission dollars ... and while we were at it, we had a little a fun and got to share the Gospel.

Each team we sent out to gather stories in 2012 took a life-sized poster of Lottie Moon, the woman our missions' offering is named after, with the goal of showing "Lottie @ Work" in places and doing ministries you'd never expect. You should have seen the crazy looks thrown our way when we pulled out a 4-foot 3-inch poster of a missionary from the early 1900s. Of course we got a lot of smiles and laughter when we asked people to pose with our Flat Lottie. But to our surprise, this poster (sitting in a dugout canoe, scuba diving or digging a well) provided an opening to share about this legacy missionary and the message she carried so many years ago.

We'd like to share our favorite "Flat Lottie on Assignment" photos with you ... one for each month of the year.
Rex and Leslie Jones, longtime members of Bellevue Baptist Church of Cordova, Tenn., near Memphis, have raised three sons who work hard in school, are polite and respectful, and have a heart for missions and ministry — who also happen to be talented football players.
