What does Jesus have to say about caring for children? More than 600 million children around the world live in absolute poverty. Approximately 153 million of those children are orphans. Across Asia, children live in extremely poor conditions, often wondering where their next meal will come from. Take a look into the condition of a vast majority of the world’s children and hear what Jesus asks us to do for them.

She approaches a woman and tugs on her sleeve, extending a small, dirty palm and uttering in a childish, imploring voice: “Sister, give me two taka!” The woman shrugs her off, telling Minara* to go find work as a housemaid. The girl cries, “No, give me money!” but the woman brushes past and continues on her way. Minara isn’t fazed — she’s gotten used to these reactions, and worse. The 9-year-old, dressed in faded, dirty clothes, continues pushing through the crowd to find another kind face. She must find some generous souls if she and her family will eat tonight.

Photographs of them diving, fishing and living on the coast of southern Thailand have been featured in National Geographic and other media sources. Valuing a call from God more than her own comfort and time, Wasana Moonsiti sees these people for who they are — a people needing Christ’s love even more than the toothbrush she is teaching them to use or the single television in their tiny village.

In the months and years following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, a disaster that claimed more than 200,000 lives, many organizations brought short-term relief and care to the Moken people. But as their projects ended, Thailand’s Sea Gypsies were left to fend for themselves in a world they did not know. Used to fishing, gathering and living from nature’s abundance, they now face a world of cement homes, cell phones and television. Wasana Moonsiti continues to return to Phayam Island with food and Bible stories. She teaches them to use soap as they shower and to brush their teeth every day. But more than that, she shows them the sacrificial love she has found in Christ.

Gathered in a village of cement homes built after the tsunami, they earn their living from the land and water. Imagine the beautiful scene — miles of dark green bushes along rolling hills, and tall, skinny trees with plumage on top to shade the shrubs.
